Last minute info on the 3 Sisters Overnighter
Are you guys ready to ride the Sisters?!! It’s going to be a great weekend! Here are a few things you need to pack for our trip since they are not provided in the cabins:
-
Towels for bath & river use.
-
Soap, shampoo, conditioner.
-
Bed linens if you are planning on sleeping on the futons in the living room. The beds in the bedroom will have linens.
-
Floatation device for river fun (they are available to rent at the office too)
-
We will be grilling steaks on Saturday night, if the weather permits. If you let me (Carol Alexander) know before Thursday, I can pick you up a steak (choice strip steak) and bring it in a cooler when we go up on Friday. The price is usually around $8-$9 per steak but it will be well worth it! If you want anything else to go with it, you’ll have to provide it. I’ve been told there is a meat market in Leakey that has an excellent selection if you want to buy your own when we get there.
The cabins have full size coffee pots and filters. Bring your coffee and any other snacks/drinks you desire. There are convenience stores and a couple of restaurants nearby so you won’t starve.
Only AT&T & T-Mobile are available at the campsite. They do have wifi. I will give you all the password the day of the ride.
Last but not least, the weather report shows scattered thunderstorms (50%) in Leakey on Friday but Saturday and Sunday it’s showing partly cloudy with a 20% chance of precipitation.
For more info, click on the picture above and it will take you to the overnighter page.

Caverns of Sonora
September 3-5, 2016
KSU time 7 am
KSU Location Mc Donalds @ the Y in Oak Hill
Join Jesse and Jack on a ride to spelunk the Caverns of Sonora. We will be leaving at 7 am on Saturday morning and return on Monday around noon. On the day we depart Austin, be sure to bring an appetitie. We will be having breakfast in Llano at Jesse's favorite breakfast spot.
It will include some great roads to and from Sonora. We will even be dancing with a couple of the twisted sisters (335 & 337) on our return trip.
Our tour of the caverns is set for Sunday at 10 a.m. That will give us plenty of time to sleep late and have breakfast. Entrance fee is $16 per person.
We have a block of rooms at the Best Western Sonora Inn @ 270 Hwy 277N They have given us a sweet deal of $72 per night for either a king or two queens. To get your room at this special rate, call the hotel direct at 325-387-9111 and tell them you are with the "cowboy" group.
In addition to the caverns, we will also stop at Fort McKavett on the way to Sonora, and while in Sonora there will be opportunities to check out some other places, including the Old Sonora Ice House Ranch Museum.
If anyone feels up to riding after sunset, Sonora is only a 45 minute ride from Devil's Sinkhole in Rocksprings, which is supposed to have an amazing bat display. Access to the park can be obtained only by contacting Devil's Sinkhole Society 830-683-BATS (2287) to prearrange a tour. Tours are by reservation only.

Big Bend
October 5-10, 2017
KSU TBA
Mc Donalds @ the Y in Oak Hill
2017's Big Bend Ride is now all set to go. Traditionally the trip was five days total and initially started by spending the first two nights in Fort Davis.
Jesse decided to extend the trip by one day to give us a full free day at Big Bend National Park, so this year the total number of days is six.
While setting up all of the hotel rooms, Jesse ran into a snag. No rooms were available in Fort Davis that weekend due to some other events taking place. Instead, we will be staying in Alpine the first two nights. This isn't a bad thing. It is only 23 miles from Alpine to Fort Davis. It is closer to the Marfa Lights Viewing Center, and offers more opportunities for food, entertainment, etc. (trust me, a LOT more!).
The second day of the trip is a free day. Jesse will be riding up to Fort Davis and a bit further north to ride the twisties in the Davis Mountains. All are welcome to join him or do as they wish with their free day.
The third day of the trip we will be traveling from Alpine to Marfa, then south to the border. From there we will ride through some beautiful trans pecos country through Big Bend State Park (no fee) and on into Terlingua. We should arrive around noon, giving you plenty of time to check out local things, such as Terlingua Ghost Town, Big Bend National Park, and if you bring your passport, the modest Mexico town of Boquillas. Also join Jesse, and anyone else wishing to participate, for the traditional sunset viewing from ‘The Porch’ in Terlingua Ghost Town, followed by dinner at the Starlight Theatre Restaurant.
The fourth day is a free day, giving you opportunity to explore Big Bend National Park. If you have never been to Big Bend National Park, you are welcome to join Jesse on a ride and a few easy going, but fun, short hikes in the park. NOTE: There may be a fee entering Big Bend National Park.
Also, in the event you were not aware, the crossing into Boquillas, Mexico is now open. If you go to Boquillas, please remember you will be in Mexico and will need a passport. The crossing is within the National Park, on the far southeast side near Rio Grande Village Visitor Center. You cannot ride or drive across the crossing, but instead have to walk. The crossing closes at 5:30pm, but they do have a really cheap hotel in Boquillas (at one point it was only $10 per night). If you do decide to stay the night, please let Jesse know in advance if at all possible. Also, you won’t want to stay the second night, else you won't make the ride the next day to Del Rio. (I strongly suggest not staying the night and to avoid alcohol in excess – it is a long ride back to the hotel).
The fifth day we get up early and have breakfast at the Chisos Mountains Lodge Restaurant. They usually have a buffet and the view is outstanding! We then make our way to Del Rio, with a stop at Judge Roy Bean's Visitor Center.
The last day we make our way home. There will most likely be a few separate groups; scenic, fastest and in-between. The night before we all typically hang out at the pool and figure out who is going which way and shoot the breeze.
I hope you decide to join us for this fun ride!!!
Please make hotel reservations as soon as you can, then let Jesse know you are ready to go. Absolute latest date is 9/1/2017. I do not suggest waiting until the last minute. Hotels in the Big Bend region fill up very fast!
